DEPRESSION

Life throws us all sorts of challenges, and we each have different coping strategies. However, sometimes, these strategies don’t work due to a cumulation of challenges one after another or due to a significant loss, such as a partner or pet. This can lead to mental and physical symptoms such as withdrawal, lack of energy, lack of concentration, not being able to sleep, or lack of motivation to do the things you once enjoyed.

“I learned that my sadness never destroyed what was great about me. You just have to go back to that greatness, find that one little light that’s left. I’m lucky I found one little glimmer stored away.”

ANXIETY

Anxiety can create excessive and persistent worry about realistic or unrealistic threats. Anxiety can dominate a person’s thoughts and lead to them perceiving a lack of control and worry over various aspects of their life, such as preventing individuals from activities they once enjoyed and affecting their work, school, and social life.

Common symptoms include palpitations, increased breathing rate, sweating, sleep disturbances, vomiting, frequent urination, exhaustion, aches and pains, loss of appetite, weakness, difficulty concentrating, feeling faint and dizzy, headaches, stomach pains and cramps.

PHOBIAS

An excessive and unreasonable fear of specific objects, people, or places, such as clowns, animals, or heights, characterises phobias. These fears often lead to avoidance behaviours that significantly interfere with daily life. Phobias can emerge in childhood or adolescence and are usually related to stressful situations. Phobias are generally created or triggered by something and can be debilitating if not addressed.

ADDICTIONS

Addiction can occur at any life stage and can occur in many forms, such as drugs and alcohol, gaming, gambling and smoking or vaping.

Addictions are primarily maintained and hard to stop as the individual is ‘rewarded’ for a behaviour, partly due to the dopamine transmitter in the brain, which releases “a feel good” mood, for example, such as just after eating chocolate.

Drugs and Alcohol

Drug and Alcohol addiction is a dependence to drugs or alcohol physically and mentally.

Drug and Alcohol dependence, along with mental illness, is often associated with genetics, personality, biological and environmental factors.

Once these habits are formed, it is difficult to break the behaviours that link the individual to the addiction, and individuals may need to experience more of the reward to have the same “feel good” mood occurring.

GRIEF

Grief can present itself physically and emotionally to the loss of someone or something we have dearly loved and had an attachment to, such as a grandparent or a pet.

Those experiencing grief can have symptoms such as denial, shock, guilt, anger, numbness, loss of appetite, sleeping too much, lack of sleep, non-specific pain and feeling empty can be experienced. A person grieving can spend much time yearning and ruminating over memories of the deceased.

No two people can experience grief the same, and it can be experienced differently due to culture, religion, education and the personal relationship with the deceased.

Grief can be a loss of an unborn or newly born child, pet, career, job, or life expectation.

I understand that time and talking through these feelings in a safe, confidential place where you don’t feel rushed are essential.

WOMENS HEALTH

WOMENS HEALTH

Women have many life stages to go through, and each one can be difficult and sometimes challenging to grasp.

With the world evolving and demands changing, it is no wonder we can get confused about our purpose.

We juggle roles as partners, mothers, children, and colleagues and rarely take time to take time out and care for ourselves. Due to these demands, life can sometimes get overwhelming, leading to low self-esteem and confidence. Counselling can help clarify these thoughts.

From adulthood to retirement, we may need extra support, whether it be loss after a miscarriage, stillborn or a break up with a partner, or someone to talk to about problems at work. Reach out to me.
